This week: ‘2-Hour Tasks’ to accelerate your consulting business in 2025, and scratch your itch to work over the holidays, if you must... 2-Hour Task #3: Kickstart your podcast appearance engine Are podcast appearances on your 2025 radar? Perhaps they should be? There are plenty of well-documented reasons for the prominence and appeal of podcasts, for hosts, guests and listeners alike. If you’re just starting out, appearing on podcasts can be an incredible way to introduce yourself to an audience — giving a human edge to your digital avatar, and expanding the reach of your message. I appeared on a couple of podcasts this year, and was able to see:
Even better? Podcast appearances exist in perpetuity, making a single interview a durable, discoverable, career-long asset. So what can you do in a 2-hour window to get your wheels in motion for booking and recording podcast appearances? 1. Listen to Rochelle Moulton’s October 24th episode of The Soloist Life Rochelle breaks down creating a shortlist of target podcasts, crafting outreach, preparing for the interview, and promoting it afterwards. A tight 17-minute primer—highly recommend! [Spotify] 2. Practice out loud Even before booking any appearances, you can start to gauge your comfort with an interview format on your own. Well, sort of on your own… Use your now-trained AI to generate a potential flow of questions you might get asked by a host. You can use a prompt such as: “Pretend you’re a top business podcaster for [YOUR ICP / TARGET BUYER]. What are 5 pillar questions you’d ask me to fill a 30 minute interview? The main thing I want to make sure to cover is [YOUR SIGNATURE POV] and my [XYZ] framework. I also want to cover why [YOUR ICP] might consider working with a [XYZ] consultant in the early days. Don’t be afraid to ask me challenging questions that will make for an interesting listen for the audience.” Because you’ve trained your AI, these questions will be customized to you, your business, and your IP. Yet another reason to get that sidekick of yours onboarded! Zoom in to see the podcast interview questions ChatGPT generated for me: Generate your questions and test out how you might answer them verbally. Yes, out loud. Pacing around your home, looking into the mirror, out on a walk, whatever. Only by speaking your answers out loud will you start to notice the weaker parts of your POV and narrative. And better now than in a live interview. 3. Identify potential CTAs The end-goal of a podcast appearance is not the appearance itself. Yes, an appearance can raise your profile and spread your message... But you have an opportunity to be much more tactical by working-in a very specific call-to-action (CTA) for listeners that will directly benefit your business. This CTA could be:
Think about what specific action would work best for the current stage of your business. If there are assets to create, or backend piping to set up to enable this CTA, you can start to schedule that work. In sum, podcast appearances can be fun and impactful, but they can also be nerve-racking and require a lot of preparation. Getting yourself started with intention and familiarity with the format can set you up for some knockout appearances in the upcoming year. 💡 -Wes |
