💡 A Japanese comms coach nails it

Did you check out Jeff O’Dea’s profile?

A total stranger when I scrolled through LinkedIn last night, then…

In less than a minute, I was able to:

  • Learn something about cross-cultural communication
  • Ascertain Jeff’s niche: bridging the Japanese<>English cultural divide in business communications
  • Understand Jeff’s ICP (ideal client profile): large companies with Japanese/English exposure

And then, I stayed for probably five more minutes clicking through his content, walking away with a pretty decent sense of how he thinks about the cultural language issues in business (in Japan and beyond).

Not bad, huh?

But also not a surprising outcome when you have a decidedly tight market position, and clear, compelling visual assets on display.

Let’s take a closer look:

What first caught my eye in the feed was this:

In a matter of seconds, I get a uniquely presented, valuable insight on business comms, and I start to wonder: “what type of work does this person do?

So, I click on his name and see this:

The banner image almost says it all, but his header confirms it: comms coach for Japanese business professionals.

Then I scroll down — his About & Services sections double-down again on CROSS-CULTURAL and JAPAN.

And then…”ooh, more pictures 👀 “

And finally, the articulation of his core mission, and his target clients:

Yup, I didn’t know Jeff 30 seconds ago, but now I know what Jeff’s up to.

And, I’m going to stay a while and keep consuming his content:

So to recap:

  1. An Intellectual Headshot shared in a recent post caught my interest
  2. Banner + headline quickly articulated his precise niche
  3. About / Services / Experience sections expanded on the niche
  4. More Headshots made me stay a while
  5. Then I shared his profile with several hundred people who also had probably never heard of him before

...and the loop continues.

Now, I'm not a LinkedIn optimization specialist.

And I certainly don't believe LinkedIn is the one almighty solution for marketing your solo consulting business.

But, we all sorta need to be there.

So, if we’re gonna be there, can you telegraph your market position this clearly?

More specifically, do you have the niche clarity and the visual assets to do so?

I know I’m inspired to tighten mine up like Jeff’s.
