💡 A reader drops her 'shell'

Yesterday, I wrote about 'tossing the shell' - the idea that our prior corporate homes were protective havens to develop our expertise, but they’re ultimately temporary armor.

It’s our expertise that endures, and can survive on its own.

Long-time Lightbulber and UX research expert Leslie F. wrote in with a keen observation:

YES! One thing I'd add is that it was important for me to let some time pass, to let go of this shell/identity.

It took me a whole year+ after I quit my big tech job (thinking about and doing other things) to start seeing my stories with enough narrative distance...

It’s so true.

After spending so much time in a certain context, an adjustment period is to be expected to move past the emotions and disorientation.

To get your balance after removing the scaffolding.

Only then can the thread through your corporate career really come into focus.

For me, it took about three months to start to see that thread, kicked into gear by proposal deadline for an inbound.

But, like Leslie, it was closer to a year of ‘narrative distance’ that really allowed me to trust that my work and expertise were truly unique and valuable, and could stand independently in the market.

(Thanks for the insight Leslie, and for letting me share.)
