💡 An unexpected audience

One of my favorite ‘Fresh Air’ episodes is a 2021 interview with Scott Weidensaul. Scott wrote a book titled “A World on the Wing” about migratory birds, including explorations of:

  • Why birds migrate (ok, makes sense)
  • How a bird in NYC will migrate to Brazil for the winter and come back to the same tree in Brooklyn in the Spring (uhh…what?!)
  • How a bar-tailed godwit migrating annually from New Zealand to Alaska will fly for 7 days without eating, sleeping, or stopping; will land for a ‘tight layover’ in tidal flats in Korea to eat, and will still make it to Alaska with enough reserves to survive the first frigid weeks of the season. (🤯)

I never had thought twice about migration, or birds in general, really. But here I am, on the edge of my seat begging to know: “Who’s going to save the Yellow Sea mudflats?!”

If you think your expertise is too specific, remember there’s someone out there passionately writing about migratory birds…

…and an unexpected audience of people listening to a podcast of him talking about writing about them.

Perhaps your expertise is not too specific — it’s just your niche.
