💡 Die With Zero


Here’s another one of those signature frameworks that just shocks you with its simplicity.

It’s from Bill Perkins, author of ‘Die with Zero: Getting All You Can From Your Money and Your Life.

Yup, quite a title, but you immediately start to get his drift.

The overarching premise of his work (and book) is that there are two counteracting forces at play in life:

Your wealth, which grows over time

And your health, which declines over time.

Separately, we can all grasp each concept.

Even taken together, we can intellectually recognize the friction and implied tradeoffs.

But when presented together visually, the powerful insight really comes out:

  • There’s a finite number of activities that you’ll have both the wealth and health to take part in

And further, because this is a time series, you’re immediately called to identify where you fall on this chart based on your age.

Then comes the big implied question:

What action do you want to take from there:

  • Prioritize activities that increase your health?
  • Rethink your financial strategies to build wealth earlier?
  • Review your professional plans to retire earlier?
  • Recalibrate your day-to-day to go paddle-boarding in the middle of the afternoon while you still can?

All these wheels get set in motion from a presentation of two simple curves.
