💡 Do it for them? Or teach them how?

‘Consultant’ is a nebulous term that can mean many things across contexts.

Yesterday’s email introduced 5 'helper personas' that fit under the consultant umbrella.

Understanding which persona you seek to address can help clarify the type of service you’re offering.

  • DFY - the consultant takes full ownership of a client’s problem
  • DWY - the consultant collaborates with the client to resolve a problem
  • DIY - the consultant guides the client on how to navigate a problem

Why does the service model matter?

The service model will inform:

  • Your engagement structure
  • Your deliverables
  • Your revenue model
  • Your capacity allocation
  • Your optimal # of clients
  • Your positioning vs. competing alternatives

Under this lens, which of these personas/service models have you been operating as in recent engagements?

Which would be most ideal for you?

Why?

Note: your service model will NOT dictate your absolute fees (e.g. DFY isn’t inherently cheaper or more expensive than DIY) — more on this to come.
