I got on a yoga kick during early Covid. Nothing crazy - just the guided classes a few times a week from home via Peloton Digital. The benefits were real, the habit stuck, and my strength, flexibility and calm all grew. But even 800+ classes later, there’s still one thing that throws me off my game. Every once in a while, Denis, my go-to instructor, says, “And this round, we’re going to do this with our eyes closed.” And sure enough, simple, standard poses that I’ve done literally 1000 times before are now a completely different level of challenge. I struggle. I wobble. And often, I fall over altogether. Why? Because I lose my visual anchors. That real-time micro-data about my surroundings is now gone, and my body panics to recalibrate. And it reminds me I still have more to aspire to in my practice. Now, think about your consulting prospect coming to you for the first time. Having a problem they can’t fix on their own, they’re already a bit unsettled. You listen to their situation patiently, then start to offer your point of view. But instead of showing them. You’re telling them. And more likely, somewhere along the way they lose their ‘balance’. Why? Because you’re asking them to step onto the mat with you blindfolded from the start. They have to translate what you’re saying into some structure they can interact with. While you might have your bearings on your view of the world, you’re leaving it up to them to gather their own. And most often they’ll struggle, wobble, and perhaps give up all together. Your job in that first meeting is to remove their blindfold. By providing some sort of framework, Headshot, or other tangible asset, you give them an anchor from the get-go. A context they can orient on. The structure to breathe through the cognitive wobbles and see your path to solution. And the added bonus: Distilling your view into these visual assets makes you more conscious of your own point-of-view. Allowing you to get better at going blindfolded yourself. Without falling over. 💡 -Wes P.S.
