Struggling to heed the seemingly counterintuitive advice to niche down as a new consultant? Remember, you’ve been here before. As a high school senior, you might have debated selecting a large vs. small university… After which, moving to a big city vs. a smaller one… Then, working for a big corporation vs. a small business or startup… One lens you might’ve considered for each is that age-old question of: “Would you rather be a big fish in a small pond, or a small fish in a big pond.” For new independent consultants, Blair Enns gets a bit more prescriptive in a recent episode of 2 Bobs:
“We talk about, “Would you rather be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond?” The answer is we all want to be big fishes in big ponds, but we all start out as small fishes. If you’re going to start out as a small fish anyway, you might as well start out as a small fish in a small pond and do what you can to become the big fish in that small pond.” In other words, be mindful of where you want to end up, but to get there, be honest about where you are now. 💡 -Wes Want to kick around ideas about your service design or positioning? |
