đź’ˇ 'Gracias para vivar...'

“Gracias para vivar en la casa…”

If you’ve seen Bridesmaids, you know the reference.

Annie (Kristen Wiig) is giving a toast at her best friend’s engagement party and quickly gets into a speech-off with rival bridesmaid Helen, each trying to prove how close they are to the bride.

At one point, Helen delivers a heartfelt message in Thai from a recent trip to Bangkok…

And not to be outdone, Annie launches into a rambling mess of mangled Spanish.

It keeps going.

And going.

And going.

Now, we may not start speaking in tongues on a client call…

But we do sometimes go on too long.

We’ve made the point.

They’re nodding.

They’re running with it.

And yet, we keep talking.

To make sure it really lands.

Or maybe to convince ourselves it does.

Cutting yourself off takes practice.

Sometimes that means preparing crisp talking points in advance.

Sometimes it means giving them the floor.

But you can do both by showing something instead.

A thoughtful framework.

A diagram that IDs their pain and points toward possibility.

A simple 2x2.

A loop.

Visuals, or 'intellectual headshots', speak for us, and can be both a brake and an accelerator.

They stop the ramble while also inviting dialogue.

They give shape to a problem, without drowning it in words.

We’re still in the business of talking.

But a great visual can frame, pivot, or steer the conversation forward...

Before your words turn to mush....

Or someone cuts your mic.
