Lightbulber and automation consultant Jakub Zelazny replied to my look at Perplexity’s niche as a search-centric chatbot with a recent personal anecdote (and gave his ok to share):

Me, a few days ago: “Hmm, I wonder if I can use the OpenAI model via API to search internet results with it.”
​
A few minutes later: “Oh, you can’t, that’s a bummer! But wait,
there is Perplexity, they talk about search all the time. Maybe I can search the internet using AI models with their API (if they have one)”
​
A few minutes of research later: “Oh, you can. Dope! Building a custom search integration would be challenging and time-consuming. I’m glad that they offer it.”
​
That’s what great positioning does to customers’ minds.

Jakub’s take is spot on.

Not only is Perplexity purpose-built to focus on search…

They are not shy about talking about it.

All the time.

Such that it sticks in people’s heads until that precise moment of need…

When you effortlessly say…

“Oh, I know someone who does that.”
