I’m on my way to my Ortega family reunion in Ruidoso, New Mexico — an enduring family tradition since I was a kid. (The picture above was at the reunion in 2022 — I have twice as many nieces/nephews now!) As I headed to the airport this afternoon, it occurred to me yet another profound shift that comes along with the solopreneur’s journey. The work-day leading up to a vacation used to include:
As a solo, today was more like:
No fires to put out on my way out the door. None to pre-extinguish for next week. No last minute delegation and handover. No forewarning of delayed responses. No exasperation of “ugh. I can finally breathe for a few days!” And most notably, no dread of what I “have to come back to” next week. Now, of course, running your own show can be a hustle. And an endurance game. But… We get to design what our work life looks like. We choose to take on work that inspires us. We decide who we want to work with. We set the boundaries that make us happy. And we take time for ourselves when we need or simply want to. Take even one of those previous 5 statements and imagine asking your last corporate manager for it an a quarterly check-in. Even the woke-est of workplaces would probably laugh it off. But not on this side. We’re in a different game now. Yes, it’s tough. But it’s oh-so worth it.
