💡 Ok, so what does it look like?


IP already exists in my head? Ok, so what does it look like?

A 60-second example (with pictures!):

Last year, I worked with Kristina Wyatt, an executive client in the climate tech space.

All you need to know for this example is that public companies in the US will soon be required to disclose their carbon emissions as part of their financial reporting.

Kristina helped write the regulation while she served as special counsel at the SEC in 2022.

These days, she’s Chief Sustainability Officer at Persefoni, a B2B carbon accounting platform and nearly every day she’s dispatched to clarify the implications of the 500+ page SEC rule for Persefoni’s customers.

I was brought in to distill her insights and scale her time - aka, so she didn’t have to keep repeating herself 😊

In one of our discovery calls, Kristina said to me, “but it’s so much more than just the Rule.”

She went on to speak off the cuff for several minutes about all the other reasons companies would want or need to disclose their emissions - customer sentiment, partner requirements, access to capital etc.

A-ha! Her familiarity with the new SEC Rule was her “Knowledge”.

Her perspective that there was more to the story was her “Insight”.

You know what’s next - I distilled her insights about climate disclosure drivers into a rough draft of a framework, which became her “IP’:

And after a few iterations, we had a durable, polished artifact she could take to sales calls, client meetings, conferences, panels, you name it.

It’s important to note that this IP required some upfront time investment, but now she’s been able use this IP as a tool to:

  • scale the distribution of her unique POV
  • further solidify her authority in the space
  • close commercial deals along the way

If she were an independent consultant, she could further deploy this IP as:

  • Thought leadership content
  • The basis for a podcast tour
  • A conversation starter with a new prospect
  • A diagnostic tool to assess the client’s readiness for emissions disclosure
  • The structure for a 3-phase productized service
  • etc. etc.
