💡 One degree removed

A frequent objection I hear from clients and friends in corporate roles when they’re asked about becoming a consultant is:

What I’ve been working on is so specific - it wouldn’t be relevant outside [my company].

This is a common mindset, especially for people who:

  • are early to mid-career (<15 YOE)
  • have worked at their current company for more than 5 years
  • serve in largely internal roles (arguably, most corporate roles are)

The hard part about this conversation is having to tell them they’re thinking too small.

The easy part is helping them break out of that mindset.

One tactic is to just think: one degree removed.

Ask yourself, how could my experience help someone…

  • …in another role
  • …in another team
  • …in another department
  • …in another office
  • …in another company
  • …in another growth stage
  • …in another industry
  • …in another part of the value chain
  • …in another part of the world
  • …in another stage in their development
  • …in another stage in their career
  • …in another type of career
  • …in another...

See how quickly we escaped the context of your current company?

Each one of these contexts holds a potential audience hungry for your insights. It’s simply a matter of breaking out of your context, even just one degree.
