💡 Personal branding is a trap

Can I just say it? I think ‘personal branding’ is a trap.

At least in the way that most people suggest it to us.

It’s seemingly intuitive, right?

I’m just one of thousands of other consultants out there - let me “build my brand” to stand out in the crowd...

So you start with new professional headshots.

A revamp to your LinkedIn page.

A new domain. A shiny website.

A custom email address. Maybe even a TikTok account.

Sure, these things are each part of the larger puzzle…

Some more important than others to establish awareness and credibility…

But what miffs me is that these are prioritized first.

Last on this list?

Insights.

Substance.

Value.

When I think about the common thread among soloists I admire, it’s not sleek videos or glamour shots.

It’s ideas.

It’s expertise on full display.

It’s a laser focus on sharing their perspective on the painful problems facing their audience and their unique take on how to structure and resolve them.

In short, their insights are their personal brand.

Everything else is just a veneer.

Avoid the trap.

Try leading with helpful insights that demonstrate your unique expertise.

Do it over and over again wherever your audience hangs out.

Then you can scratch “build my personal brand” off your to-do list.

Because it will have built itself.
