šŸ’” The Lightbulb

šŸ’” That's part of the game

Late last fall, I had a super-motivated prospect come in the door.

Fresh off watching one of my recorded talks, he booked time, told me all about his business, his positioning, his challenges.

What he was struggling to communicate in the market.

What he was struggling to articulate for himself.

All things considered, a pretty perfect match for my Headshots sprint.

He said he was too busy in December (as was I), so he asked if we could talk in January.

When I followed up in January, he wrote back right away…

..but just to say he had something come up and needed to park everything for at least 6 weeks.

Cryptic, but I didn’t push — might be a family matter (he’d told me earlier his father was ill).

I started to write him off as a tire-kicker.

That’s ok - that’s part of the game.

But part of me wanted to hold out hope.

He was super excited. We had clicked quite well.

And I was certain I could help him.

About a month later, just as I was about to reach out again, I noticed he had unsubscribed from my emails.

Again, that’s ok. That’s part of the game.

(I’m keenly aware that daily is a lot.)

But him? Where did this fall off?

I wondered what I said that day that finally pushed him away.

I marked him as "Lost" in my CRM and moved on, but still felt puzzled.

Then, last week, he announced publicly that he accepted a job…as principal of his former high school.

Worlds away from the practice he was building a few months ago, but, as he put it, just one of those curveballs from the world that he caught and ran with.

I reached out to congratulate him about the surprising turn of events, and we shared a laugh about how he'd gone dark.

So, no, he hadn’t been stringing me along.

And, no, it wasn’t anything I had said.

It was something else entirely.

And that’s ok. That’s part of the game.
