đź’ˇ The generalist's counterpoint

As you know, I’m a big proponent of finding one market segment to serve…

One ideal client profile…

One urgent pain point…

Meeting that pain with a signature POV based on your unique experiences…

And guiding a client to relief through your POV-informed service(s).

The sum of all the benefits of specialization is that it allows you to scale.

Scale your authority.

Scale your marketing activities.

Scale your pipeline development.

Scale your client delivery.

Scale your referrals.

Scale your revenue.

All that said, if narrowing your offering just hasn’t sat well with you…

And you seek to take a more multi-pronged approach to your soloist path…

You may want to check out the most recent episode of friend-of-the-Lightbulb Susan Tatum’s Stop the Noise podcast.

Susan welcomed Lindsey Lerner of Generalist World, who shared her perspective on “stacking skills” from your various career experiences, and using that to find suitable consulting engagements that may not all look alike.

My disclaimer: There is some common ground with my approach (finding your genius zone, crafting a unique positioning/value prop, etc.), but I still struggle with how compatible the described generalist approach is with a predictable and scalable business model.

However, I’m always willing to entertain and share an alternative lens that might be helpful to sorting out the next steps on your soloist journey.
