💡 The question we overlook

Every person I talk to who’s considering a move into independent consulting has unique expertise.

And if you recall the first email I sent you, you’ll remember that I believe you can build a business around anyone’s unique expertise.

So, typically, initial strategy calls quickly gravitate toward:

  • “What would I sell?”
  • “How can I get clients?”
  • “Will I make enough money?”

Sometimes, they go straight to logistical questions:

  • “Do I need an LLC?”
  • “Do I need a website?”
  • “What about health insurance?”

I could talk about these kinds of questions all day, but pretty quickly, I pump the brakes and zoom out to pose an often-overlooked question:

“Are you entrepreneurial?”

This might seem like a silly question.

Like asking a potential nanny if they like kids.

But most people are surprised by the blunt question. And they pause.

Some even giggle, perhaps because they’d like to automatically answer ‘yes’ but now genuinely wonder.

Now, by ‘entrepreneurial,’ I don’t mean ‘have you started a business before?’ — that’s certainly not a prerequisite.

Instead, I mean, quite practically, do you have evidence that self-employment is a good fit for you?

At the end of the day, we’re talking about making an intentional, profound change to:

How you’ll earn an income…

How you’ll talk about yourself…

How your mornings will look…

How you’ll redesign your life.

If you’re going to entertain this massive shift, shouldn’t you take a beat to consider whether you’re cut out for it?

Over the next few days, I’ll suggest some angles through which you can work through this question on your own.

Newbie or veteran, I hope the exercise will provide reflection, clarity, and confidence.
