I’ve now taken 8 solo consultants through The NicheFinder Sprint, and I’m seeing some common, but expected patterns in the mindset coming into the process:
At the root of the aversion to niching are fears -- understandable fears! Fear of missed revenue, fear of boredom, fear of failure… And I’ve come to believe there’s a sneaky magnifier of all this fear — what I’ll call the savior client trap. The savior client is that one well-timed, out-of-the-blue client that swoops in like a life-preserver to temporarily ‘save’ us from having to make that niching decision right away, and we get to carry on business-as-usual. Unfortunately, the savior client trap typically plays out in one of two ways:
So how do we break out of the savior trap? Snap out of the present, and shift to the future. Of course if we stay focused on how hungry we are now, we’ll be totally consumed thinking about our next meal. But if we’re thinking about how we’re going to eat next month, we can more clearly see the pieces of a system we need to put in place. Try these subtle shifts as you consider your niche: Instead of 'Where’s the biggest need right now?' ...think about 'What am I timelessly great at?' Swap ‘What do I ‘do’?’ ...for ‘What’s my repeatable service?’ Trade 'How can I serve this prospect?' ...for 'Are there more prospects like this?' Replace 'Where can I find my next client?' ...with 'Where can I build a pipeline?' As we focus on the future of the consulting business we want to create, we can shift away from waiting for the savior client, and instead work on becoming the well-known savior expert. 💡 -Wes P.S. If you’re at all curious about the NicheFinder Sprint, now’s a good time to chat. I have just two NicheFinder Sprint slots remaining in May before I shift my capacity to focus solely on ramping up IP Builder for the rest of Q2.
