đź’ˇ The scaffolding provides cover

I’m in New York for a conference this week—my first trip back in 7 or 8 years.

Among all the fun (and some not-so-fun) things that welcome you back to this city, there’s one feature of New York that’s so omnipresent you almost don’t notice it — the scaffolding!

No matter when you visit, there’s always something under construction, renovation, or repair—constant reinvention.

As I walked around last night near my midtown hotel looking for a post-flight dinner, the scaffolding struck me as yet another example of the Sagrada Familia effect.

In case you missed that post, just like the famous Spanish church that’s been under original construction for 100+ years yet proudly welcomes visitors, it’s ok to embrace your expertise as a work-in-progress and share it anyway. Sometimes, that’s a big part of the appeal.

Nearing the restaurant, the sky opened up into a torrential downpour—one that doused me, even through my rain slicker, which is more fitting for a light Seattle mist.

And when the rain came, guess where everyone scurried to...

…the nearest scaffolding.

Your WIP status really can provide you with cover.
