đź’ˇ There is no 'neutral'

One question to ponder re: yesterday's loop…

Now that we’ve established the Consultant’s Expertise Loop (C-EX Loop), you can ask yourself one overarching question regarding new, prospective work: would this work accelerate or decelerate my expertise loop?

This question is most pertinent in decisions about niche/specialization. And we can almost always justify our way in/out of straying from our lane:

  • “I’ll take on this client to test my service in a new vertical”
  • “I’ll accept this follow-on work to build my experience in implementation vs. strategy”
  • “This project is a little out there, but maybe I’ll uncover a better niche”

All of these might be true, and once again, the beauty of self-employment is you’re free to do whatever you want.

But be honest with yourself - are those justifications more about cash flow? scarcity mindset? fear of specialization?

There is no 'neutral' when straying from your expertise - if you take your foot off the gas, the loop will decelerate and you’ll have to work your way back to where you are now.

When in doubt, lean toward focus and acceleration.
