đź’ˇ Tossing the shell

We used to burrow into our corporate roles, fully immersed in the problem of the month, year, perhaps decade.

Then, when we move on, voluntarily or not...

We often think our acquired experience is not relevant without its former context:

  • The project you were on
  • The product you launched
  • The team you led

Interestingly, we have no problem seeing our experience as valuable in a new context when barking up the tree of another full-time job.

But somehow, out on our own, we believe our expertise must’ve been ephemeral.

A nice memento of a former corporate life.

But not valuable in its own right.

And monetizable? Yeah, right.

But if you think about it...

Whatever happened to that project that kept you up late?

Is that product you helped launch still around?

Is that team you led for years still at it?

Funny, it’s that context that was ephemeral.

It’s your expertise that has carried on.

For some reason, we think the egg is less valuable without the shell.

When turns out, the shell was just the protective (yet often suffocating) vessel.
