Catching up with a former coworker and fellow soloist this morning, the conversation quickly turned to AI. The types of new tools available. The quality of output. The learning curve. And oh yes, the existential dread. I’m sure it’s no surprise that this topic comes up daily, and understandably so. The progress is fast. The adoption is striking. The value is real. And while some clients are more forthcoming about the fear than others, the underlying theme is: “AI is going to take my job.” Or perhaps more personally: “My clients aren’t going to need me anymore.” That feeling will naturally evoke anxiety for any solopreneur: “If I build a business around [xyz], and an AI tool can start to do that, what will I have left to offer?” Well, it seems to me this path forks in two directions: Path 1: What’s the point? Any niche service I develop will be eradicated by AI within the next year. Path 2: Keep moving How can I leverage tech advances to improve my offering over the next year? Path 1 resigns to the present. What scraps can I capture while the ship is sinking? Path 2 looks to the future. What new value can I create that I couldn’t create yesterday? I try to take Path 2 — even if it’s just a few steps ahead. If nothing else, it’s a bit brighter. 💡 -Wes P.S.
