đź’ˇ Why we're here

Have you ever stopped to think why we’re all doing this self-employment thing?

Many of us, myself included, came in on the back of a layoff or two, seeking refuge from corporate system that no longer aligned with our personal priorities.

But there seems to be something bigger driving this collective shift.

I’m prepping for a talk on Thursday demystifying the solo/fractional consulting model for alumni of my business school (open to the public, details below)…

And I’ll be opening by talking about three eras:

The “Company Man” (1950s-1980s)

  • Workers would find a “home” at a company, stay for decades, and retire with a pension

The Climb (1990s-2010s)

  • Knowledge became more transferable, and workers were incentivized to hop jobs to chase opportunities in new companies while still climbing the corporate ladder

The Balance (2020s-Present)

  • Slapped with burnout or disillusionment from The Climb, workers seek relief by leveraging structural tech advances to deploy their own expertise independently

When you zoom out at these three eras, you see the trend towards self-deployment has been decades in the making.

We just happen to be playing in the transition period.

Interested to hear more? Join me and my co-presenter Erika Weiss (fractional CMO and fellow Lightbulber!) as we share our thoughts on the “why” "what" and “how” of solo/fractional consulting.
