You’ve heard the horror stories about the current job market. You might have experienced the brunt of it. A job posting goes live, just to receive 5,000 applicants in a few hours before it hits capacity and closes. Even if a lot of that is driven by bots, that's the reality out there, and it might even be what pushed you onto the solo path. In that context, it truly is dog-eat-dog. You’re competing for attention against thousands of other very similarly credentialed people. You gussy up your resume. Get new headshots. Milk your network for a crack in the door. Anything to stand out among the masses. Out on your own as a consultant, it might feel at times like you have to push through others for attention… But that’s just your old job-search mindset taking hold. Think back to the last client you got. Did your client screen out thousands of ‘applicants’ and select you? Probably not. More likely, they heard about you from someone. Or read something you put out. They agreed with the way you framed their problem. And the confidence you exuded that you could help them. And they chose you. Not over a dozen other consultants. But over solving the problem internally. Or kicking it down the road. Or not solving it at all. Remember what you’re competing against. It’s not other consultants. It’s alternative actions. Reframing it this way allows you to focus on communicating your unique expertise and approach to a painful problem. Without getting distracted by the horde of competitors that only exist in your mind. 💡 -Wes |
