đź’ˇ Your TED talk, minus the stage

Many people ask me for real-world examples of a signature POV, or “good IP” so I’ll share one that popped up in my feed yesterday.

Here’s a slimmed down synopsis of Kim Scott’s TED talk on Radical Candor.

If you haven’t heard of her book, Kim explores feedback dynamics of corporate teams and she holds that teams are best served by kind yet extremely candid feedback, rather than hiding behind niceties or insincere positivity.

Put so simply, it sounds obvious, right?

Well then why are so many teams plagued by toxicity from bad communications?

Watch the video to see how she breaks it down.

Topic aside though, the clip shows Kim:

  1. Present a novel framework
  2. Orient the audience on it
  3. Walk through resonant examples
  4. Preview potential actions toward an improved end-state

Now, the full TED talk is only 16 minutes. The teaser clip is only 4.

And yet, see how quickly she was able to convey authority?

How quickly she was able to get you to apply her framework in your mind to your own context or past corporate experiences?

In fact, if you were a manager or executive dealing with dysfunctional team dynamics, I bet you’d now be very interested in a call with Kim, perhaps even hire her on the spot to make some recommendations.

You might be thinking, well of course, she’s on a TED stage, with all the halo effect and credibility that that brings.

Sure, but the playbook remains the same for you and your POV, even if the scale is different.

If you can derive a durable, original framework about a problem on your domain…

Then follow those same 4 steps either through your content, or live in a first client meeting...

You will find yourself treated as the expert that you are without having to boast about your resume or grandstand your credentials.

You’ll be able to listen as a client internalizes your POV in the context of their organization.

You’ll be able to start painting them a picture of relief based on your expertise.

And ultimately, they’ll start to trust your view and your solution, with you as the central ingredient.

You don’t need to grace a TED stage to build authority and resonance (though you may well end up under those lights someday soon).

But no one gets up there without a unique and relevant POV.

That’s the real halo you’re after.

And lucky for you, it’s already in your head.
