đź’ˇ Zipping through your first year

Hopping out on your own as a solo consultant can feel like you've been dropped in the middle of a forest.

You’re not quite sure where you are.

And not quite sure where you’re going.

But you start feeling your way around.

You climb up a tree to get your bearings, and surprise…

A zipline appears in the form of your first client.

A means to get to the next tree.

Once there, another zipline segment — in the form of a follow-on engagement.

Then another — a perfectly timed word-of-mouth referral.

You pick up speed, grow some confidence.

Tree to tree. Contract to contract.

But then, you slam to a halt.

No more zip lines in sight.

And you realize you still don’t know where you are.

Or where you were going.

You were just…going.

It’s typically at this point where you say, ok I need a plan.

Where do I actually want to go?

How do I want to get there?

Is it one path or many?

And how can I construct the lines to get me there.

This doesn’t mean don’t take that first leap.

Or even the first few zips that present themselves.

Most consultants need those to test their nerve.

But the consultant’s journey is an incessantly proactive one.

And sooner than later, you have to build your own line.
