đź’ˇ Your genius zone defines your bullseye

Did you get to a zone of genius statement?

I’m doubling down here because being clear in your own mind about your unique skill set (natural and acquired) can make everything else you do with your consulting business so much easier.

Think about it:

You’re designing your own business, essentially from scratch...

Why would you opt into offering tasks or activities that don’t allow you to put your best foot forward?

  • If you were a cake baker opening a bakery, you’d make and sell your best cakes
  • If you were a chef opening a restaurant, you’d feature your career-long signature dishes
  • If you were a track & field star, you’d try to qualify for the Olympics in your best event

But as solo consultants, we often get sheepish.

“I can help [xyz] companies with any marketing problem.”

Or start to hedge toward what we think might bring us the most demand.

“I thrive doing UX research, but my prospects seem to want a fractional UX Lead.”

This is yet another holdover from a corporate employee mindset.

You end up contorting yourself to fill someone else’s need somewhere near your 'bullseye'…

Rather than operating precisely where you excel and have proven results.

The result: Scope creep. Frustration. Quality dips. And typically lower margins.

So, take a moment to get clear on your market-agnostic zone of genius.

(Seriously, try out that ChatGPT prompt from yesterday, and see below for some samples to guide your thinking.)

From there, we can start to sniff out those magic corners of the market where your most effortless work provides the most client value.

When you stay in that bullseye, your marketing, your sales, your client delivery, and your referral loops will all get easier.

Sample zone-of-genius statements, by function:

  • Product: I’m the go-to for balancing what users want and what the business needs in a way that makes everyone happy.
  • Marketing: I turn scattered brand ideas into standout campaigns that grab people’s attention.
  • Strategy: I’m good at breaking down big, messy problems into clear steps that teams can act on right away.
  • Content writer/strategist: I turn complex topics into simple, easy-to-digest content that builds brand authority.
  • Executive coach: I turn “stuck” moments into breakthrough insights that help executives lead more confidently.

Let these inspire, not limit you. Try to capture the 'magic' you deliver through your work.
