When I spend time in any country where English isn’t the primary language, it’s hard not to appreciate the dissonance between me struggling to order food or ask for the restroom vs. a native speaker effortlessly communicating in the local tongue. On one side of the interaction, you have someone earnestly trying their best in an unfamiliar context far from home. On the other, you have a native expert who could rattle off guidance a foreign visitor without breaking a sweat. When you’re operating in your ‘genius zone’ as a consultant, you’re the native speaker. You don’t actively think about verb conjugation or word definitions. You just talk. Concepts and market dynamics are so ingrained and obvious to you, they spill out of you without active filtering or pruning. What’s the slice of your domain, and the natural helper persona that comes so naturally you don’t realize you’re working? So intellectually stimulated that you find yourself having fun. That’s the zone where you can deliver exceptional value to a client who doesn’t share your internalized foundation. Your client is the visitor to your home country. And they’re eager, if not desperate, for you to guide them around. 💡 -Wes |
